Rewriting myth: Moli\`{e}re's Don Juan.

This diploma thesis deals with the problems of literary myths, especially with the rewriting of the literary myth of Don Juan written by Tirso de Molina and Jean-Baptiste Pouqueline, better known as Moliere. The theoretical part briefly outlines the issue of defining and rewriting of literary myths with the main emphasis on clarifying the terminology needed for the subsequent analysis. Clear articulation and determination of " mythemes ", which formed the basic mythical structure of the analyzed works, is crucial for the thesis. In the practical part, the thesis deals with the Spanish hypotext, The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest, which established the literary tradition of the myth of Don Juan. Subsequently, other versions, that create the real literary myth, became the focus of attention - Moliere´s tragicomedy Dom Juan or the Feast with the Statue and its reworking and versification by the French playwright Thomas Corneille. The aim of the thesis is to show to what extent the context of the origin of the work and the contemporary aesthetics transform the elaboration and handling of the mythemes and thus revise the given literary myth.

Title of the thesis: The role of the director in Moliere's Tartuffe. Keywords: Molière, comédien (actor), dramaturgie (dramaturgy), hypocrite (hypocrite), hypocrisie (hypocrisy). Abstract The thesis entitled De l'implication du metteur en scène dans l'interprétation de Tartuffe examines the most important problems and storylines in two stage interpretations of Tartuffe. The aim of this thesis is to compare the play in French and Czech and analyze the similarities and differences between two versions. Moreover, this work is intended to show how directors at La Comedie-Française and Realistické Divadlo put the comedy on the stage guided by their personal perception of the original text or translation and to what extent they follow the rules of classicism. The thesis consists of an introduction, a methodological section, seven main chapters and a conclusion. The introduction is devoted to a general description of Molière and King Louis XIV. The methodological section outlines the structure of the thesis. The following chapters constitute the core of the thesis. The first chapter delineates the traces of religion in Tartuffe and the reasons why Molière was not allowed to put on this play for a long time. Abstract: The thesis treats the works of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin also known as Molière and their legacy in modern Czech theatre. It characterizes French society of the seventeenth century and the main features of contemporary philosophical and artistic styles, focusing on the dramatic creation of classicism. It also summarizes the life of Molière and his work, subdividing it according to generic, formal and thematic criteria. Within this frame, it gives a detailed analysis of the most important plays, representing the individual categories. It also studies the modern Czech theatrical stage. Focusing on the historical context, it explores the development of the stage from the end of the Second World War until nowadays. It gives a complex outline of Molière's plays presented during the different periods, evaluating the influence of cultural and historical context on the particular interpretation. This evaluation is based on the information presented in contemporary press and promotional materials of the given theatres and thus examines Molière's plays performed on Czech theatre stages in the present. The thesis is not only based on Molière's main works Don Juan, Tartuffe or The Miser but it also studies characters in comedies like The Bourgeois Gentleman, Scapin's Deceits and others. It distinguishes two categories, major and minor characters. Nevertheless the attention is particularly focused on the minor characters. The goal of the thesis is to show what importance the characters have in Molière's plays and what is their role. Dramatic Responses to Molière's Misanthrope

English abstract The thesis follows the phenomenon of sequels to Molière's The Misanthrope as they appeared in French (mostly dramatic) literature in various eras and socio- political situations - ranging from the times of the French revolution up to the 1990s. The main interest in examining those texts is finding a standpoint each author takes within the ongoing disputes of the original play's interpretation (using the famous dispute between Rousseau and d'Alembert as a basic distinction in those disputes) and describing strategies of each author's work with the story and characterisation of key characters in the plays. Critical responses to the plays and their staging are discussed wherever possible. In the conclusion, the plays are compared analytically and possible trends in the approach to the material are outlined: the focus visibly shifts from the philosophical questions of the play to the unfulfilled love affair between Alceste and Celimene over the years.
